ITS will soon be offering a new service that ties together many communication technologies using Microsoft Office Communication Server (OCS). This service integrates with the campus Microsoft Exchange solution and future services such as Microsoft SharePoint.

OCS provides users with ubiquitous access to a telephone, voice mail, email, instant messaging, and audio/video conferencing. Features include:

  • Voice mail: Consolidate email and voice mail into one inbox and access voice mail with a telephone, computer, or mobile device.
  • Telephony: Receive and place calls from your computer, desk phone, or mobile phone.
  • Instant messaging and presence: Contact people based on their presence or availability. Just click a name to email, instant message, share your desktop, or start a video conference.
  • Unified conferencing: Use a single interface for audio, video, web conferencing, and desktop sharing.

OCS will be implemented as a lower cost telephone option compared to the traditional phone system. The pilot of the OCS project will continue through May and the service will become available to campus this summer.

User requirements include a Windows PC or Macintosh with a headset, integrated speaker and microphone, or USB-connected telephone. Video conferencing is also an option for users with an internal or external video camera.
